Possibly the Best Dunk Ever in a Game!

This dunk is by Gerard Anderson of Cal State Fullerton in the first round of the Big West Tournament against Cal State Northridge. Simply an amazing dunk, one in which no one in the NBA would ever attempt during a game. Well maybe Nate Robinson, but I really hope that he would never do that.

See for yourself this amazing dunk.

Not only was this in game, but it was during a tournament game against one the team’s biggest rivals. Simply amazing.

Petey’s Corner: Chapman and Carroll Will Fail

With 2009 behind all of us it’s time to look towards what 2010 will bring. There are two people whom I hope 2010 isn’t so good for. It’s not that I wish harm on anyone or anything like that. I just want these two people to fail in 2010. Those two people of course are Pete Carroll and Aroldis Chapman.

Pete Carroll

I want Carroll to fail because I am a fan of USC (so of course I am not being biased, wink wink) and I have seen him struggle in the NFL before and he’s dumb for going back. Back in 1994 Carroll went 6-10 with the New York Jets and was 27-21 with the New England Patriots. He made two playoff appearances with the Patriots, but he feels that he is better suited to be in the NFL a lot more now than he was back then because of the experience he has gained.

Going into halftime the Celtics saw themselves in a 15-point deficit to the Indiana Pacers at home Tuesday night. Surprised? I know I was. The Celtics just lost a home game to the Philadelphia 76ers last Friday but came out big on the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday.

Tuesday night saw a different perspective, being down by a lot to a team that has already beaten them earlier in the year. It was a true test for the Celtics and Donny Marshall even said during the game that “This will be a good test for the Celtics. To be down by a lot early and to come back and win will really show their maturity.” Of course he was predicting a Celtics win and he’s lucky that they did come back and win.

The Celtics ended up winning the game 103-94 by outscoring the Pacers 61-37 in the second half. The win improved the Celtics to 22-5 on the year while Indiana fell to 9-18.

On the eve of hosting the Philadelphia 76ers, the buzz of having Allen Iverson back in the Garden playing for his former team is no longer there. That is because he won’t be playing tomorrow night. Tragic, simply tragic. “The Answer” apparently doesn’t have the answer for his knee arthritis and a left shoulder contusion. So that means that the struggling 76ers will be without any experienced point guard with both Iverson and Lou Williams out for the game. It will give the Celtics a good look at rookie Jrue Holiday and I am sure Rondo will expose him early and often. Holiday is a quick guard out of UCLA, but he has seen limited minutes thus far this season and will likely struggle against Rondo and his quickness. It’s too bad that Iverson isn’t playing though. It would have been nice to hear the crowd give him an ovation when he was introduced, maybe not standing ovation but probably a lot of cheers. I guess I’ll just have to wait for next time, but for tomorrow’s game I look for an absolute blowout for the Celtics. The 76ers have lost 13 of their past 14 and have no experience controlling the ball. Should be fun to watch. Go C’s!

OK, I know that I haven’t posted in a little while so I figured I would make it up today with my opinion on what’s going on in the Boston sports world recently. Well a couple of days ago I picked up a couple tickets for a couple games for the Red Sox upcoming season, and I knew that it was a good investment. Buy them before they start spending tons of money and maybe they’d be cheaper, or maybe they’ll still be expensive. To answer your question as to whether I bought the tickets because I want to see Marco Scutaro, the answer is “no, not even close.” It’s because I knew that it wouldn’t be long before Theo Epstein actually made a significant move, like he did yesterday, and he did it twice.

Petey’s Corner: Loss of Daniels Hurts More Than You may Know

So with the Celtics streaking (in terms of wins that is) they have hit a major problem; Marquis Daniels is out for the time being with a wrist/thumb injury and in his place Doc Rivers needs to insert (gulp) Brian Scalabrine and Tony Allen. Daniels said that he keeps injuring his wrist in games and during practice and Rajon Rondo’s fastball passes didn’t help Daniels stay healthy and have resulted in missed games for the back-up swingman.

For the year, Daniels is averaging 5.7 points, 2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Those numbers may not be overly impressive but his role off the bench is very important. He comes into the game, plays strong defense and is able to score when needed. He can slash to the rim or take the jumpshot, either way he can score when necessary. Now his replacements are no slouches when it comes to knowing the Celtics system but they have never been very good at it.

I am still a Celtics fan, I swear. Today Allen Iverson rejoined the Philadelphia 76ers, agreeing on a one-year deal that would make him a free agent after the season. He last played for the team three seasons ago but was traded to Denver Nuggets in late December 2006 for Andre Miller, which most people thought was the end of AI’s days in Philly.

Until Lou Williams went down with jaw surgery that put him out at least eight weeks, AI was retired from the Memphis Grizzlies but of course that didn’t last too long.

OK, so I really don’t want to even touch on this subject because of how bad it is. If you don’t know by now, the Pats lost to the New Orleans Saints last night 38-17. After the first quarter the Saints were pretty much in complete control of the game. Even that is an understatement because the Saints marched down the field on their first possession, leading to a field goal. The Patriots then came back and lead their own drive, resulting in a touchdown by Laurence Maroney. After that, New Orleans controlled the entire game.

Petey’s Corner: Weis Not Lucky Enough

After five seasons with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, head coach Charlie Weis was fired Monday afternoon. This was a move that has been anticipated since the end of last season as the team has struggled mightily the past couple of seasons under his control. The Irish went 6-6 on the year, but they did start off the season with a record of 6-2 before ending the season on a four game losing streak. That could easily do it for the former Patriots offensive coordinator. He brought his team to back-to-back bowl games in his first two seasons, but the next three seasons saw a combined record of 16-21, and for the historic football program, that was not good enough.

The two bowl games that Notre Dame made it to were against Ohio State in 2005 (34-20 loss) and in 2006 against LSU (41-14 loss). Weis went into Notre Dame as an alumni himself and had very high hopes of rejuvenating a very promising program that had struggled in recent years. Unfortunately for Weis, he went 35-27 in his five-year tenure with the team for a winning percentage of .565. His winning percentage is lower than his predecessors Tyronne Willingham’s and Bob Davie’s .583.

In my eyes, Weis was never a good fit for the Fighting Irish and that was apparent after his first two seasons. I am surprised that he even lasted a fifth year. After going 3-9 in 2007 and then 6-6 in 2008, he should’ve been fired after the ‘08 season. This past season was probably a test to see how he would do after two good years and then two poor years, too bad he followed it up with a similar 6-6 record.

Notre Dame was very successful on the offensive side of the ball this past season but they let up way too many points on the opposing end. In Saturday’s game against Stanford, the Irish lost 45-38. Earlier in the year they let up 40 points to Washington State, 37 to Washington and 38 to Michigan. It’s too bad Weis wasn’t a defensive coordinator for the Pats, otherwise he might have found more success in South Bend.

While the defense struggled, quarterback Jimmy Clausen had a stellar year with 3,722 yards with 28 touchdowns and only four interceptions. His No.1 target Golden Tate finished with 93 receptions for 1,496 yards and 15 touchdowns. Michael Floyd also finished with 44 receptions for 795 yards and nine touchdowns.

What’s next for the Fighting Irish? Can you say Romeo Crennel? Just kidding, but it would be funny. They need a defensive-minded coach and I am sure they will go out and get one this offseason.

Currently the Boston Celtics sit atop the Atlantic Division with a record of 12-4 but a lot of those wins came in very close games and to not very good teams. Well the Toronto Raptors are now 7-10 on the year after the C’s handed them a 116-103 loss last night at the TD Garden. It was actually the first game the Raptors played against a division rival, too bad it was the Celtics, otherwise they might have had a chance to start off with a win. The win, on the other hand, was the Celtics’ third in a row and hopefully they can return to their winning ways that they started off the season with.
